We are pleased to announce VERSION, the flipside of Various, Portland's premier Dubstep dance party since December 2006.
Version is about celebrating bass music and having a nice time. As with Various, we plan to bring quality Dubstep and Dancehall and more on a proper soundsystem.
Building on a strong foundation, Version brings the vibes uptown to Holocene with sub-bass reinforcement from the mighty H.A.S. Systems.
E3

E3 co-hosts the monthly Atlas party at Holocene and is a frequent player in the Various set. He also ran BSI Records, Portland's own dubwise record label as well as being a member of Systemwide. Ezra's personality and joy of music comes through loud and clear when he plays and he brings a high degree of energy to the Dubstep he plays without straying into dudestep.
MONKEYTEK

MONKEYTEK is a founding member of the Various crew and currently works for Lo Dubs records here in Portland finding tunes to release on record. Djing since the days of Jungle in 1996, the progression to Dancehall and Dubstep was a natural one. Monkeytek held down a monthly radio program on London's Subfm for 3 years and still enjoys the occasional radio session.
Known to bring upfront dubplates & deep bass, he looks forward to bringing the sound to Version!

JON A.D.

JON. A.D. has been involved in music longer than most people can remember. By day, he runs Lo Dubs Records (the label) and Anthem Records (the shop) and has a knack for tying together styles of music between which most folk don't see any connection. In 2006, Jon, alongside Ryan Organ & Monkeytek, co-founded the Various soundsystem night.

EARLY

EARLY(aka SnackMasterDj & The Selects!) holds down the weekly Forward Fridays Dancehall night at the U&I in North Portland alongside his Small Axe man's YT & Jagga Culture.

Hosted by JAGGA CULTURE.

Straight from down Jamaica way and also part of Small Axe crew, Jagga has hosted Various several times and is massively versatile on the microphone. Miles beyond the idea of an MC, he brings a certain laid back musicality to the dance, at times blending into the fabric of the record so well to become invisible.

Should Ken Burns ever decide to quit talking about things like the park system or the civil war, and turn his attention towards the trends of culture in contemporary music, the thread about music indigenous to the UK would not be dominated solely by rock bands. The advent of Garage music, or, to define, music driven by melodic, soulful, & evocative basslines, is Britain's true innovation, which in hindsight, can be tracked all the way back to Reggae, and all the way forward, through all "Bass" music (D&B, etc.) to the current sub strains of Dubstep and the UK Funky sound.
While it is true that (almost) all music has a bassline, it can be safely said that among these genres, one finds the many of the most applicable for that feeling you get from low end after you've tied one on. Some sounds, while combined with dusk and drink, just make you want to shake out that catharsis in an extra vigorous way. If you've experienced Dancehall properly, and maybe been to the long running Friday dedicated to the sound in North Portland, you know this. If you've been to Various, you know this. Version will finally bring these two worlds together, along with a dash of the new house-tempo, carribean percussion driven varient known as UK Funky, and much in between, in the soundclash style of 70's Jamaican soundsystems, like they should have been fully to begin with.
Stay tuned!
